Sanctus Oliverus Plunkett · 1625

584. St. Oliver Plunkett of Armagh

Sanctus Oliverus Plunkett · c. 1625–1681 · Meath, Rome, Armagh, London · archbishop and martyr · feast 1 July

On 1 July 1681 by the old calendar (11 July by the new), an Irish archbishop was put to death at Tyburn in London. He was Oliver Plunkett, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. When the sentence of death was read to him, he is reported to have answered, "Deo gratias," thanks be to God. Today's text sets three sources side by side: English Wikipedia's "Oliver Plunkett," the Catholic Encyclopedia article "Blessed Oliver Plunket," and Britannica's entry "Saint Oliver Plunket." Where they disagree we say so, and what we could not confirm we leave out. I have not read the trial records or the early biographies in the original.

A Wider Angle on the Age — Ireland After Cromwell and the Popish Plot

Catholics in seventeenth-century Ireland lived under long pressure. After Cromwell's conquest in the early 1650s priests were hunted, and that aftermath is the reason Oliver could not go home for years. The restoration of the monarchy in 1660 brought some relief, but not security. According to Wikipedia, the Duke of Ormonde, the king's governor in Dublin, tolerated the Catholic hierarchy until the middle of the 1670s. Then the Test Act of 1673 changed the climate, and in 1678 the so-called Popish Plot, an invented story in England of Catholic conspiracy against the king, turned a bad situation deadly. Irish Catholic leaders were swept into it. Oliver was one of the men who paid with his life.

A Boy from Meath, a Priest in Rome

Oliver was born at Loughcrew in County Meath. The year is disputed. Wikipedia gives 1 November 1625, explaining that scholarly consensus has favoured 1625 since the 1930s and noting that earlier biographers used 1629. The Catholic Encyclopedia and Britannica give 1629. He came from an old Hiberno-Norman family, and until about the age of sixteen he was taught by a kinsman, Patrick Plunkett, Abbot of St Mary's in Dublin.

The year he left for Rome is also reported differently: 1647 in Wikipedia, 1645 in the Catholic Encyclopedia. Both say he travelled with Father Scarampi of the Roman Oratory, who was the papal envoy to the Irish. In Rome he studied at the Irish College, and the Catholic Encyclopedia adds that he studied civil and canon law at the Jesuit Roman College and at the Sapienza. He was ordained a priest in 1654. He then served as the Irish bishops' representative in Rome, and because Cromwell's conquest made a return impossible, he stayed and became a professor of theology in 1657. Wikipedia says he also taught at the College of Propaganda Fide. More than twenty years had passed since he left home.

Archbishop of Armagh

On 9 July 1669 the Congregation of Propaganda Fide named Oliver Archbishop of Armagh, a date that both Wikipedia and the Catholic Encyclopedia give. He was consecrated bishop on 30 November at Ghent, in what is now Belgium, by Eugeen-Albert d'Allamont, Bishop of Ghent. Neither source states the year in its main text. Wikipedia says he landed in Ireland on 7 March 1670, while the Catholic Encyclopedia says he began his work at Armagh in mid-March. The pallium was granted in consistory on 28 July 1670.

What he did on his return was to look for the scattered flock. The Catholic Encyclopedia reports that he confirmed about ten thousand people within three months and, according to a letter of December 1673, 48,655 in four years. Wikipedia gives about 48,000. He held two provincial synods and sought to correct the drinking of some clergy. The Catholic Encyclopedia also says that he persuaded some of the armed "Tories" of Ulster, men who lived by plunder, to give it up, and obtained pardons for them.

The Jesuit school he founded at Drogheda in 1670 has been remembered. Wikipedia reports that a year later it had 150 students, at least forty of them Protestant, and describes it as the first integrated school in Ireland. It was closed and its building demolished after the Test Act took effect in 1673.

Hiding, Arrest and Trial

When persecution revived in 1673 he took to the mountains and woods; the Catholic Encyclopedia says he hid with the Archbishop of Cashel. In 1678, during the Popish Plot panic, the former Archbishop of Armagh Peter Talbot was arrested, and Oliver went into hiding again. On 6 December 1679 he was arrested in Dublin and imprisoned in Dublin Castle. Both sources give this date.

The charge was high treason: that he had plotted a French invasion of Ireland and a levy to pay for an army of seventy thousand men. Wikipedia states that this was unproven. The trial begun at Dundalk collapsed, and he was moved to Newgate prison in London. The Catholic Encyclopedia says only that the trial was transferred to London. At Westminster Hall the first grand jury declined to indict, yet he was not released. In the trial that followed he was denied defence counsel, and his witnesses could not be gathered in time. Wikipedia notes that this trial is generally regarded as a serious miscarriage of justice. In June 1681 he was found guilty of treason. According to Wikipedia the jury needed about fifteen minutes, and he replied, "Deo gratias."

Martyrdom at Tyburn

On 1 July 1681 (11 July new style) Oliver was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn. Wikipedia gives his age as fifty-five and calls him the last Catholic martyr to die in England. Wikipedia passes on, with the word "reputedly," that Charles II knew him to be innocent but judged a pardon too dangerous politically; we do not state it as fact.

His remains were first buried in the churchyard of St Giles in the Fields. Wikipedia says they were exhumed in 1683, the Catholic Encyclopedia says early 1684, and taken to the Benedictine monastery of Lamspringe in Germany; the sources differ on the year. The greater part of his body now rests at Downside Abbey in England. His head passed through Rome and Armagh to Drogheda. The Catholic Encyclopedia, which dates from 1907 to 1912, says it had been at the Dominican convent in Drogheda since 1722. Wikipedia says it has rested in St Peter's Church, Drogheda, since 29 June 1921, which is where it is venerated today.

Beatification and Canonization

The Catholic Encyclopedia reports that a decree of Pope Leo XIII on 9 December 1886 began the examination of the cause of 264 Irish martyrs. Oliver was beatified by Pope Benedict XV on 23 May 1920. Wikipedia gives the date the cause opened as 27 July 1951. He was canonized by Pope Paul VI on 12 October 1975, a date given by both Britannica and Wikipedia's infobox, and the requirement of a second miracle was waived. Wikipedia describes him as the first new Irish saint in almost seven hundred years. His feast is 1 July in Wikipedia and 11 July in Britannica, which appears to be the difference between old and new calendar dates.

The Will of God He Sought

Oliver could have kept teaching in Rome in safety. He went back instead to be primate of a persecuted Church. What he did there was strikingly ordinary: he confirmed, he opened a school, he corrected the lives of clergy, he reasoned with men who carried weapons. The will of God he found was not the glory of martyrdom but remaining beside the people entrusted to him. He did not leave when it became dangerous, and in prison and before the sentence he is reported to have given thanks.

Meditation

First, quietly ask yourself where your own difficult but assigned place is, the one you are tempted to leave.

Second, ask for the grace to choose words of thanks and peace even before someone who has wronged you.

Prayer for Today

God of peace, we remember Saint Oliver Plunkett, who stayed beside the people entrusted to him in time of persecution, opened a school, gave the sacrament of confirmation, and gave thanks even before a false accusation. Help us to keep the places we have been given, and to seek peace and reconciliation even in the face of injustice. We ask this through the intercession of the saint, and through Christ our Lord. Amen.
