582. St. Malachy of Armagh
On 2 November 1148, at the abbey of Clairvaux in Champagne, an Irish bishop died in the arms of Abbot Bernard. He had fallen ill on the road to Rome, where he was heading for the second time. He had been christened Máel Máedóc, which the Latin Church renders as Malachias and English speakers as Malachy. Today's text sets two strands side by side: the 1910 Catholic Encyclopedia article by W. Grattan-Flood, which appears at New Advent and at EWTN, and English Wikipedia's "Saint Malachy." Both lean heavily on Bernard's Life of Malachy. Where they disagree we say so, and where a story comes from only one place we mark it. I have not read Bernard's original text myself.
A Wider Angle on the Age — The Irish Church in the Twelfth Century
In the early twelfth century the Irish Church was organized around monasteries. The Catholic Encyclopedia, following Bernard, says the church of Armagh had for a long time been ruled by lay abbots, and that discipline had grown lax. In the movement for reform, the Synod of Ráth Breasail shaped the diocesan structure, and Wikipedia explains that the diocese of Connor was set up under one of its canons. Malachy grew up in the middle of that effort.
The Boy of Armagh
Malachy was born at Armagh in 1094 into the family of Ua Morgair. Bernard describes him as noble by birth. Wikipedia explains that the name Máel Máedóc means servant or devotee of Saint Máedóc of Ferns. He studied under Imhar O'Hagan, a recluse who later became abbot of Armagh and who, according to Wikipedia, sympathized with reform. Wikipedia alone adds that his brother Gilla Críst, known as Christian, became bishop of Clogher.
Ordination and Lismore
Both sources say that Cellach, called Celsus, archbishop of Armagh, ordained him priest in 1119. After that the accounts diverge. The Catholic Encyclopedia says he went to Lismore and spent nearly two years under Malchus studying the sacred liturgy and theology. Wikipedia says he spent three years at Lismore after ordination, with the consent of Cellach and Imar. Only Wikipedia reports that Cellach made him his vicar, that he administered the diocese of Armagh for a year or two, and that he tried to bring it into line with Roman custom.
Bangor and Connor
In 1123 the head of the monastery of Bangor died, and Malachy was chosen abbot. Wikipedia says that the predecessor, a relative on his mother's side, surrendered the office to him. In 1124, both sources agree on the year, he was made bishop of Connor, and Wikipedia names Cellach as the one who ordained him. The Catholic Encyclopedia says only that this was a year after Bangor. He kept his residence at Bangor. In 1127 he visited Lismore again and served as confessor to Cormac MacCarthy, prince of Desmond. When native princes sacked Connor, he led the Bangor monks to Iveragh in County Kerry, where, according to both sources, King Cormac welcomed them.
Archbishop of Armagh
Celsus died in 1129 and was buried at Lismore. In 1132 Malachy was named archbishop of Armagh, and both sources stress that he accepted with great reluctance. Because of intrigues he could not take possession for two years, and in the end he had to buy the Bachal Isu, the Staff of Jesus, from Niall, who held the see as a lay primate. According to Bernard, in three years he restored discipline that had grown lax and had the Roman liturgy adopted. Wikipedia adds the restoration of marriage, the renewal of confession and confirmation, the introduction of Roman chant, and a story that he planted apple trees during famines. These details come from Wikipedia alone.
Down, Connor, and Rome
Both sources say he resigned Armagh, but the year differs: 1138 in the Catholic Encyclopedia, 1136 or 1137 in Wikipedia. The Encyclopedia says he returned to Connor, divided the see into Down and Connor, and kept Down. Wikipedia treats the two dioceses as held together from 1124. Both agree that he founded a priory of Austin Canons at Downpatrick.
Early in 1139 he travelled to Rome by way of Scotland, England, and France, and on the way he visited Bernard at Clairvaux. He asked Pope Innocent (Wikipedia says Innocent II) for the pallia for Armagh and Cashel, and he was appointed legate for Ireland. On the return journey he stopped again at Clairvaux and obtained five monks, with an Irishman named Christian as superior. The abbey founded on this basis in 1142 was the great abbey of Mellifont, according to both sources.
The End at Clairvaux
In 1148 he set out for Rome a second time. He fell ill on reaching Clairvaux and died, in Wikipedia's words, in the arms of Bernard on 2 November. Wikipedia's information box gives his age as 53 or 54. According to Wikipedia, his body was kept at Clairvaux and moved several times, and in 1194 portions were sent to Mellifont and other Cistercian houses in Ireland. His head is said to be in the treasury of Troyes Cathedral, and the tombs were destroyed after the French Revolution. The relic story rests on Wikipedia alone.
Canonization and Feast
Wikipedia calls him the first native-born Irish saint to be formally canonized, but gives no date. The Catholic Encyclopedia says Pope Clement (III) canonized him on 6 July 1199. Since Clement III reigned from 1187 to 1191, one suspects that the year is a misprint for 1190, but I found no source stating 1190, so I do not assert it. Both sources give his feast as 3 November, moved by a day so as not to coincide with All Souls. Wikipedia lists him as patron of the Archdiocese of Armagh and of the Diocese of Down and Connor. A "Prophecy of the Popes" is attributed to him; Wikipedia reports that most scholars regard it as a sixteenth-century hoax, and this text does not use it.
The Will of God
Malachy is not portrayed as a man who sought high office. He accepted the see of Armagh reluctantly, and his work there was less about raising the dignity of the see than about repairing lax discipline and ordering the liturgy. He was also a man on the road: from Armagh to Lismore, from Bangor to Kerry, to Rome and back, and at last to Clairvaux. God's will is sometimes done not by holding a post but by letting go of one and walking another road.
Meditation
First, if the post you hold today is not one you would have chosen, quietly ask whether there is a share in it that God is asking of you.
Second, when you must set down what you have built, ask for a heart that prays for the one who will take it up.
Prayer for Today
Lord, shepherd of your people, as tradition says you restored discipline and liturgy in your Church through Saint Malachy, born at Armagh, who labored at Bangor and Down and ended his life at Clairvaux, grant that we too may never lose the heart to seek your will, whether our place is joyful or heavy. Teach us to set down gladly what we must set down, and to walk gladly where we must walk. Through his intercession, and through Christ our Lord. Amen.
