581. St. Cedd
Among the bleak hills of North Yorkshire lies the village of Lastingham. Beneath its church of St Mary survives an old crypt, which English Wikipedia says corresponds to the shrine that once held Cedd's body. In the seventh century Cedd was raised at Lindisfarne, became a bishop far to the south among the East Saxons, and died on this northern hillside. Almost everything we know of him rests on Book III of Bede's Ecclesiastical History. Today's text sets two strands side by side: English Wikipedia's "Cedd" and the 1908 Catholic Encyclopedia article, which appears at New Advent and at catholic.org. Where they disagree, we say so, and where a story comes from only one place, we mark it.
A Wider Angle on the Age — A Divided England and a King in Northumbria
In the middle of the seventh century England was a patchwork of kingdoms. According to Wikipedia, King Oswiu of Northumbria was the power in the north, while in the Midlands Peada, a son of Penda, ruled the Middle Angles as a sub-king (the Catholic Encyclopedia calls him an ealdorman). Peada is said to have agreed to become Christian in order to marry. On one side stood the monks of Lindisfarne with their Celtic customs, on the other the customs of Rome. Cedd stood between them. The Catholic Encyclopedia describes him as Celtic in his upbringing, yet one who adopted the Roman Easter.
Brothers and Lindisfarne
Both sources say he was brought up at Lindisfarne under Saint Aidan. Wikipedia puts his birth around 620 in Northumbria, but adds that his being a priest by 653 "probably pushes his birth date back to the early 620s." The exact year is not known. He had three brothers: Chad, Cynibil, and Caelin. All four became priests, and Cedd and Chad became bishops. Wikipedia suspects that Cedd was the eldest, but this is a conjecture.
From the Middle Angles to the East Saxons
In 653 King Oswiu sent Cedd, together with three other priests (Diuma, Atta, and Betti), to the Middle Angles. Wikipedia judges that this mission made little headway and that the effective evangelization of the Midlands came later through Chad. Soon afterward Cedd was recalled. Sigeberht the Good, king of the East Saxons, had asked for help in bringing the faith back to his people. According to Wikipedia, Sigeberht was baptized by Bishop Finan of Lindisfarne. Cedd went to the East Saxons with one other priest.
On his episcopal ordination the sources differ. The Catholic Encyclopedia says only that he was consecrated bishop there, naming neither a year nor a consecrator. Wikipedia says he returned to Lindisfarne after his first conversions to report to Finan, who called in two Irish bishops to help ordain him. Wikipedia's information box carries the date c. 654, but its body text does not commit to a year. Later writers counted Cedd as the second bishop of London, and both sources note that Bede never gives him that title.
The Churches of Essex
Both sources say he founded churches and monasteries at Tilbury and at Ithancester. Wikipedia explains that the Tilbury site was probably East Tilbury and that Ithancester was almost certainly Bradwell-on-Sea. Wikipedia also reports that Cedd excommunicated a thegn who had entered an unlawful marriage and rebuked King Sigeberht over the matter. Sigeberht was murdered in 660, and Bede presents that death as a kind of penance. This passage reflects Wikipedia's summary of Bede, and I could not check the original.
Forty Days at Lastingham
Both sources say Cedd founded Lastingham at the request of Æthelwald, sub-king of Deira. Wikipedia adds that Caelin brought Æthelwald and Cedd together. Cedd resolved to fast for forty days to purify the site, but royal business called him away after thirty, and his brother Cynibil completed the rest. This story rests on Bede alone. The Catholic Encyclopedia calls Cedd the first abbot of Lastingham, and Wikipedia says he remained abbot until his death, when Chad succeeded him.
The Interpreter at Whitby
At the Synod of Whitby in 664, the Celtic and Roman parties clashed over the date of Easter. Following Bede, Wikipedia says that since the two sides could not understand one another's languages, Cedd served as interpreter for both. The same source says he ended by accepting the Roman Easter (Bede III.26). In that long dispute his place was less that of a spokesman for one camp than of a bridge between two tongues.
Death and What Remains
Both sources say he died of plague at Lastingham on 26 October 664. They differ on the sequence. The Catholic Encyclopedia says he went to Lastingham immediately after the synod and died there, while Wikipedia says he returned to Essex after the council and went to Lastingham again a little later, where he fell ill. Wikipedia alone preserves one further detail from Bede: when Cedd died, thirty monks came from Essex to pay their respects at Lastingham, and all but one small boy died of the same plague. His body was first buried in a grave at Lastingham and later moved into a shrine inside the monastery church once a stone church was built. Wikipedia says that shrine was destroyed in the Danish period.
His feast is given by Wikipedia as 26 October (the anniversary of his death, kept by the Church of England and also called "Essex Day") and as 7 January (Orthodox). The 1908 Catholic Encyclopedia says his festival was kept on 7 January. None of the three sources I read gives a date or procedure of canonization; Wikipedia says only that he is venerated in the Anglican, Catholic, and Orthodox traditions. In 1954 a "St Cedd's Year" was observed, and his name is part of the dedication of Chelmsford Cathedral.
The Will of God He Sought
Cedd's life did not stay in one place. It moved from Lindisfarne to the Midlands, to Essex, and then to the hills of Yorkshire. At the Synod of Whitby it placed him where two parties could not understand each other's words, and he spoke for both. What he left behind in each place was not a grand achievement but small dwellings of prayer, churches and monasteries. The will of God is sometimes accomplished by one person standing between this side and that, handing words across.
Reflection
First, if there are two people near you today who cannot understand each other, ask God to make you someone who carries words between them rather than someone who wins.
Second, if you have begun a work with brothers or sisters, ask for the trust to leave what you cannot finish in the hands of those who may complete it.
Prayer for Today
Lord, shepherd of all peoples, as tradition says you led Saint Cedd from Lindisfarne to Essex and Lastingham to proclaim your word, make us people who carry your word wherever we go. Let us be bridges between different tongues and customs, and when we cannot finish what we begin, give us the faith to entrust it to you. Through the intercession of your saint, we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
