오늘의 글은 영문 위키백과 「Edward the Confessor」와 가톨릭 백과사전(New Advent)의 「St.
579. St. Edward the Confessor
On 28 December 1065 a new church on the banks of the Thames was consecrated. The king who had ordered it built could not attend, because he was too weak to leave his bed. According to English Wikipedia, he died at Westminster on 5 January of the following year. This account is drawn from the English Wikipedia article "Edward the Confessor" and the Catholic Encyclopedia article "St. Edward the Confessor" at New Advent. Where the two disagree, the difference is stated. Where a story comes from later biographies, it is marked as tradition.
A Wider Angle on the Age — England Under Viking Pressure
The England into which Edward was born was not a safe country. Danish forces came across the North Sea again and again, and the throne did not pass quietly within one family. Wikipedia reports that when Sweyn seized the crown in 1013, Edward's mother Emma fled to Normandy with the boy and his brother Alfred. Edward came back the next year with his father Æthelred, but after Edmund Ironside died in November 1016 he went into exile again. Wikipedia puts the length of that exile at about twenty-five years, mostly in Normandy. The Catholic Encyclopedia summarizes it more briefly: he was sent to the Norman court when he was barely ten years old and spent most of his early manhood as an exile.
Birth and Exile
The Catholic Encyclopedia says Edward was born in 1003, the son of Æthelred II and Emma. Wikipedia says he was born between 1003 and 1005, probably at Islip in Oxfordshire. The exact year is therefore uncertain, and that should be kept in mind from the start. Emma was the daughter of Duke Richard of Normandy, so Normandy was not a foreign land to the boy. Wikipedia adds a caution, however: the evidence for who supported Edward in Normandy is thin before the early 1030s.
When Cnut died in 1035, Harold seized the throne. The Catholic Encyclopedia says Edward and Alfred tried to claim the crown, but Alfred fell into Harold's hands and was killed, and Edward went back to Normandy. That retreat, after losing a brother, was the shape of his young life.
Becoming King
Wikipedia says Edward was recalled to England in 1041 under Harthacnut. When Harthacnut died on 8 June 1042, Earl Godwin supported Edward's succession, and Edward was received as king after swearing to keep the laws of Cnut. He was crowned at Winchester on Easter Sunday, 3 April 1043. The Catholic Encyclopedia describes him as about forty at the time of his accession, which fits roughly with the range of birth years above.
On 23 January 1045 he married Edith, Godwin's daughter. The Catholic Encyclopedia says the marriage was made at the request of the nobles, and that Edward, bound by a vow of chastity, asked his wife to live with him as a sister. Wikipedia handles this point with care. The claim that he remained celibate rests on an ambiguous passage in a life of the king reworked in the twelfth century by Osbert of Clare, and most historians believe Edward hoped to have an heir by Edith at least until 1051. It is more honest, then, not to state his lifelong chastity as settled fact.
The Character of His Reign
The Catholic Encyclopedia paints a reign of almost unbroken peace. It credits his gentleness and prudence with managing the ambitions of Godwin's family without bloodshed, and it says his only wars were repelling a Welsh raid and helping Malcolm III of Scotland against Macbeth. It also says he abolished the Danegeld tax. Later generations of Englishmen, the same article adds, called again and again for "the good St. Edward's laws" whenever they felt oppressed.
Wikipedia is more divided. Some historians see his reign as a time when royal power weakened, while Frank Barlow calls him a vigorous and ambitious man. The Ramsey Liber Benefactorum reports that he was open to bribes. His rages and his love of hunting are recorded too, and to some readers they sit poorly beside the image of a saint. Wikipedia also cites Ann Williams, who notes that Edward did not enjoy his later saintly reputation in the eleventh century. Reading a saint's life means accepting such disagreements along with the praise.
The Vow and Westminster
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, Edward vowed a pilgrimage to the tomb of St. Peter in Rome. The pope, however, commuted the vow into the rebuilding of the abbey of St. Peter at Westminster. Wikipedia says work on the royal burial church began between 1042 and 1052 and calls it the first Norman Romanesque church in England. It was consecrated on 28 December 1065, and Edward, as noted, was too weak to attend. The Catholic Encyclopedia says the dedication took place a week before his death, which matches the Wikipedia dates. Wikipedia adds that the building was completed around 1090.
Edward died on 5 January 1066. Wikipedia's text and infobox give the fifth, though a footer note says 4 or 5 January, so there is a small wobble even within one source. He was buried on 6 January, and on that same day Harold Godwinson was crowned. Both William of Normandy and Harold claimed to have been promised the throne. The history that followed is well known.
Canonization
The road to sainthood was long. Wikipedia says Osbert of Clare campaigned for it from the 1130s, and that Pope Innocent II postponed a decision in 1139. In 1160 Abbot Laurence renewed the petition with royal and church backing, and Pope Alexander III issued the bull of canonization on 7 February 1161. The Catholic Encyclopedia also gives 1161 as the year of canonization.
His body was moved twice. The Catholic Encyclopedia says that on 13 October 1163 St. Thomas of Canterbury solemnly translated his incorrupt body in the presence of Henry II. Wikipedia states that on 13 October 1269 Henry III moved the relics to a chapel east of the sanctuary and built a new tomb. His feast is 13 October, which Wikipedia describes as an optional memorial in the Catholic dioceses of England. It also notes that the Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 5 January.
The Catholic Encyclopedia further says he was the first English king to touch for the "king's evil," with many sufferers reportedly healed. This is a tradition reported in a 1909 encyclopedia, and the Wikipedia article consulted does not mention it, so it is not asserted here as fact.
The Will of God He Sought
The Edward of these sources is not a flawless portrait of holiness. He is a man who began in exile, was crowned, exchanged one vow for another to build a church, and died without having settled the question of who would follow him. Even so, the Church calls him Confessor, an old title for a saint who did not die as a martyr but bore witness to the faith by the whole of his life. What the sources consistently point to is the church at Westminster and a reign remembered as peaceful. The will of God is sometimes shown in a single word from the Church that changes a vow, and in the long labor of stacking stone upon stone to make a place for prayer.
Reflection
First, recall a time when things did not go as planned and a vow or resolution had to change. Ask quietly whether God was with you on the changed road.
Second, think of one small thing you are building today, a place of prayer or a relationship that will outlast you, and entrust it to God.
Prayer for Today
Lord, King of peace, as Saint Edward the Confessor sought to build your house through exile in a strange land and the weight of a crown, grant that we too may accept your way on the days when things do not go as we wished. Let the small labors we undertake become places of praise for you, and give justice and gentleness to those who govern. We ask this through the intercession of your saint, and through Christ our Lord. Amen.
