Sanctus Brendanus (Brendan of Clonfert, Brendan the Navigator) · 484

이 글은 영문 위키백과의 「Brendan the Navigator」 항목과 가톨릭 백과사전(New Advent)의 「St.

578. St. Brendan the Navigator

Sanctus Brendanus (Brendan of Clonfert, Brendan the Navigator) · born c. 484 · died c. 577 · abbot from Kerry, Ireland · associated with Ardfert and Clonfert · counted among the "Twelve Apostles of Ireland" · no formal canonization process documented in the sources consulted · feast 16 May

The monks stepped onto a great island, lit a fire to cook, and felt the ground begin to move. They scrambled back into their boat, and Brendan told them that the island was no island at all but an enormous fish. The scene comes from a Latin book called the Voyage of Saint Brendan the Abbot, and it is one of the best-loved episodes of Irish Christian storytelling. This account is drawn from the English Wikipedia article "Brendan the Navigator" and the Catholic Encyclopedia article on St. Brendan at New Advent. Both say that secure information about his life is scarce. Where the sources differ on dates and places, the differences are stated here, and the sea voyage is treated as a tradition rather than as a documented event.

A Wider Angle on the Age — Ireland of the Monasteries

The Ireland in which Brendan is said to have lived, in the sixth century, lay beyond the administration of the Roman Empire. Christianity there spread less through bishops' cities than through monasteries, which served at once as schools, houses of prayer, and shelters for pilgrims. Wikipedia describes Brendan as one of the founders known as the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. Monks of this age built small stone cells and chapels on remote headlands and islands of the western coast. A life turned entirely toward God was often called a pilgrimage, and entrusting oneself to the sea with no fixed destination could be understood as one form of it. The stories about Brendan grew in that climate.

A Child of Kerry

Wikipedia reports that Brendan was born around 484 in the province of Munster, in County Kerry near Tralee, to parents named Finnlug and Cara. The Catholic Encyclopedia also gives 484 and places his birth at Ciarraighe Luachra near Tralee. Wikipedia adds that another tradition places his birth in the Fenit area. These dates are drawn from Irish annals and genealogies, so they are best read as approximate.

His earliest teacher is said to have been Saint Íte, the abbess of Killeedy. Both sources state that he was fostered and educated by her for five years. Wikipedia also records a tradition that at about the age of six he went to the monastery school of Jarlath at Tuam. He was baptized by Bishop Erc at Tubrid, near Ardfert, and Erc is said to have ordained him priest. The Catholic Encyclopedia gives the year of ordination as 512, while Wikipedia says he was twenty-six. Some accounts also count him among those tutored by Finnian of Clonard.

From Ardfert to Clonfert

The Catholic Encyclopedia says that between 512 and 530 Brendan built monastic cells at Ardfert and at Shanakeel. Ardfert later became a bishopric, and Wikipedia says that crowds of pilgrims and students gathered there. The Catholic Encyclopedia also names a monastery on Inis-da-druim, now Coney Island in County Clare, around 550, and churches at Inchiquin and Inishglora.

His most famous foundation is Clonfert. The Catholic Encyclopedia gives 557 for its founding, while Wikipedia mentions 563 in connection with Clonfert in another passage, so the sources do not agree on the year. Wikipedia says he appointed a man named Moinenn as head of the community there. Tradition also carries Brendan beyond Ireland. Both sources say he went to Wales and to Iona and spent three years on a mission in Britain. Wikipedia adds stories that he studied under Gildas at Llancarfan and met Columba at Hinba, in what is now Argyll, but it admits that the order of these journeys is not clearly established.

The Voyage of Saint Brendan the Abbot

Brendan is best known through a Latin work, the Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis. Wikipedia classifies it as an immram, an Irish genre of voyage tale. It places the earliest surviving manuscript around 900 and suggests the work may have been composed earlier, perhaps in the second half of the eighth century. The Catholic Encyclopedia, by contrast, says the legend was set down in writing in the eleventh century. The two sources therefore disagree about the date of the text.

The story, as it has come down, goes like this. Brendan and a company of monks set out in a leather-covered boat to find the Promised Land of the Saints. The number of companions differs from version to version. The journey lasts seven years. Along the way the travellers land on the back of a huge fish, Jasconius, pass an Island of Birds, and meet an island of silent monks. In the end they are allowed to enter the Promised Land briefly and then return. Wikipedia notes that the tale has parallels with other Irish voyage stories, the Voyage of Bran and the Voyage of Máel Dúin.

It is important to be plain about what is known. The Catholic Encyclopedia says there is no historical proof of this journey and that its destination cannot be determined. It also records that Vincent of Beauvais denied the account's authenticity and that the Bollandists did not accept it. Wikipedia mentions that in the twentieth century Tim Severin built a leather boat of the kind the story describes and sailed it across the North Atlantic, a voyage he recounted in his 1978 book The Brendan Voyage. That expedition showed that such a boat could cross the ocean. It did not show where Brendan went, or whether he went at all.

Death and Veneration

Wikipedia states that Brendan died around 577 at Annaghdown while visiting his sister Briga, and the Catholic Encyclopedia likewise names Annaghdown as the place of his death in 577. According to Wikipedia, he had arranged for his body to be taken secretly to Clonfert in a cart, so that no one could seize his relics, and he was buried there. This is a tradition and is not asserted here as fact.

The record of veneration is clearer. His feast is kept on 16 May. The Catholic Encyclopedia adds that old Irish calendars marked 22 March as the departure of Brendan's community. Wikipedia lists him as patron of sailors, boatmen, mariners and travellers, and of the dioceses of Kerry and Clonfert.

Canonization

Wikipedia says only that Brendan is recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church, and it gives no details of a formal process. The Catholic Encyclopedia entry likewise does not state a year of canonization. Saints of the sixth century were generally received through the long veneration of the local church rather than through the procedures of later centuries. No canonization year is given here.

The Will of God He Sought

What the tradition keeps pointing to is the Promised Land. In the story, Brendan boards the boat without knowing where it will land, and he entrusts the voyage to God for seven years. Whether the voyage happened as told, no one can say. What can be said is that houses of prayer such as Ardfert and Clonfert are associated with his name, and that Wikipedia records pilgrims and students gathering at Ardfert. The will of God is not made known only by reaching far places. It also shows itself when a praying community is established and sustained. The tradition says that the will of God Brendan sought was the heart of a pilgrim, who gives both the leaving and the staying into God's hands.

Reflection

First, before deciding where you will go today, take a quiet moment to ask the Lord which way to take.

Second, remember a time when you did not know where you were headed and felt uneasy, and thank God who was with you even then.

Third, set aside a little silence so that the small places of your daily life, your home and your workplace, may become houses of prayer.

Fourth, pray for those who work on the sea and on the road: sailors, travellers and migrants.

Lord, through Saint Brendan you showed us a pilgrim's heart that seeks you both on the road and in the place where we stay. Let us trust your guidance wherever we are, and protect those who labor on the sea and on the road. Through the intercession of Saint Brendan, let us walk to the end toward the promised land, your Kingdom. Amen.

Sources — Brendan's birth (about 484) and birthplace (near Tralee in County Kerry; an alternative tradition of the Fenit area), his parents' names, five years of fosterage under Íte, baptism and ordination by Erc (ordination in 512 in one source, at age twenty-six in the other), the Tuam school tradition, the cells at Ardfert and Shanakeel (512 to 530), Inis-da-druim (about 550), the founding of Clonfert (557 in one source and 563 in another), the traditions of missions in Wales, Iona and Britain, the nature and date of the Navigatio (a manuscript of about 900, a possible late eighth-century composition, and an eleventh-century setting down in the other source) and its plot, the statement that there is no historical proof, Tim Severin's voyage, the death at Annaghdown about 577 and the tradition of the removal of his body, the feast of 16 May and the old calendar date of 22 March, and his patronages were cross-checked against the English Wikipedia article "Brendan the Navigator" and the Catholic Encyclopedia (New Advent) article "St. Brendan." The text of the Navigatio itself and the original Irish annals and saints' lives were not consulted directly, and the content and year of any formal canonization process could not be confirmed and are therefore not stated.
