Sanctus Dunstanus · 909

574. St. Dunstan of Canterbury

Sanctus Dunstanus · born about 909 (about 910 in some reckonings) · died 19 May 988 · England · abbot of Glastonbury · archbishop of Canterbury · monastic reformer · feast ordered kept by the Synod of Winchester in 1029 · feast 19 May

In the low hills of Somerset, in the south-west of England, lies the town of Glastonbury. Grass now grows over the ruins of the old abbey, but in the early tenth century a boy studied here under scholars who had come from Ireland, learning letters and music. His name was Dunstan. He would become abbot of Glastonbury, a counsellor to several kings and, for nearly thirty years, archbishop of Canterbury. For a long time medieval England remembered him as one of its best-loved saints. This account follows the outline on which the Catholic Encyclopedia (1907–1912), the copy of that entry kept at Heiligenlexikon and the English Wikipedia article agree, and it marks any story that belongs to later legend.

A Wider Angle on the Age — The Church in Tenth-Century England

When Dunstan was born, England was slowly drawing together under the kings of Wessex. In the ninth century Danish raiders had plundered monastery after monastery, and many houses had been abandoned or had fallen into decay. Glastonbury itself was close to ruin, and both the Catholic Encyclopedia and Wikipedia say that Irish monks taught there. The Rule of Saint Benedict was already widely kept on the Continent, but in England its strict form was rare. Dunstan's life is bound up with the attempt to revive that scattered monastic tradition. It is worth remembering, too, how quickly kings came and went. He lived through the reigns of Æthelstan, Edmund, Eadred, Eadwig, Edgar, Edward and Æthelred.

A Boy at Glastonbury

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, Dunstan was born near Glastonbury to Heorstan, a West Saxon noble, and Cynethryth. The year of his birth is not certain. Wikipedia gives about 909 and notes that about 910 is possible, while the Catholic Encyclopedia rejects the date of 924 found in a later biography. He was educated at the church of St Mary at Glastonbury and, we are told, received the tonsure and minor orders. He is said to have had gifts for writing, drawing, the harp and metalwork. Wikipedia reports that he made church plate in silver, illuminated manuscripts, and cast bells and built organs. A manuscript known as the Glastonbury Classbook contains a drawing of a monk kneeling before Christ, and Wikipedia says that he is thought likely to have drawn it, though this is an attribution and not a certainty.

The Catholic Encyclopedia also repeats a tale of his birth. On Candlemas, it says, every candle in the church went out and was relit from the candle held by his mother. The Encyclopedia tells this as a miracle story, and it should be read as tradition of faith, not as a fact confirmed by historians.

Driven from Court

The Catholic Encyclopedia relates that Dunstan spent some time at the court of King Æthelstan. Jealous courtiers accused him of studying heathen writings and practising magic. He was seized, bound and thrown into a foul pit. He made his way to Winchester, where his kinsman Bishop Ælfheah the Bald took him in and urged him toward the monastic life. After a severe illness he returned to Glastonbury and lived as a hermit in a tiny cell beside St Mary's church. There, it is said, he went on working metal and playing the harp. The Encyclopedia notes a report that the illness was leprosy and adds that blood poisoning is the more likely explanation.

A famous legend attaches to this cell. In the late eleventh century a story arose that the Devil came to tempt the hermit and that Dunstan seized his face with red-hot tongs. Both the Catholic Encyclopedia and Wikipedia call this a late legend. It is the reason he is often shown holding tongs, and Wikipedia lists him as patron of goldsmiths, silversmiths, blacksmiths, locksmiths, musicians and bellringers.

Abbot of Glastonbury

Æthelstan died in 940, and King Edmund called Dunstan to court. The Catholic Encyclopedia says that rivals soon threatened to ruin him again, and it recounts how Edmund, hunting a stag, nearly rode over the Cheddar cliffs and then summoned Dunstan to make him abbot of Glastonbury. This tale is told with a strong flavour of legend, and the sources do not give a firm date for his appointment, though Heiligenlexikon places it about 940. What both main sources agree on is that he established Benedictine monastic life at Glastonbury, rebuilt the church, cloister and enclosure, and opened a school.

After Edmund was murdered in 946, King Eadred made Dunstan guardian of the royal treasure and records, and the Catholic Encyclopedia says that he gave him a large share in the government. When the king offered him the bishoprics of Winchester and Crediton, Dunstan declined, saying that he would remain at the king's side.

Exile in Ghent

Eadred died in 955 and the young Eadwig was crowned in 956. At the coronation feast something happened that the Catholic Encyclopedia describes in this way: Dunstan and Bishop Cynesige went to bring the king back from the company of two women. Wikipedia treats the episode as legend. Either way, the king's circle turned against Dunstan. He lost his property and fled to Flanders. Sources differ on whether the flight came in 956 or 957.

Count Arnulf I of Flanders received him, and he stayed at the abbey of Mont Blandin near Ghent. The Catholic Encyclopedia says that there he saw at first hand the stricter Benedictine observance of the Continent. This experience is generally understood to have shaped his later reform in England. Before the end of 957 the Mercians and Northumbrians rejected Eadwig and chose his brother Edgar as king north of the Thames, and Edgar's advisers recalled Dunstan.

From Bishop to Archbishop

On his return, Dunstan was consecrated bishop by Archbishop Oda. He was given Worcester and, soon after, London, and he held the two sees together. Wikipedia notes that the order and dates of the two appointments are uncertain. Archbishop Oda died on 2 June 958, and the candidate Eadwig had chosen to succeed him was set aside. Dunstan became archbishop of Canterbury in 959, and in 960 he travelled to Rome, where Pope John XII gave him the pallium, the band of wool that marks an archbishop.

King Edgar ruled until 975, and Dunstan was his chief counsellor. The Catholic Encyclopedia says that he helped to place Æthelwold at Winchester and Oswald at Worcester, two churchmen who joined him in the monastic reform. This Oswald of Worcester is not the same man as the Northumbrian king Oswald. The reform aimed to restore the Benedictine Rule in the monasteries, to reorder the clergy of the cathedral churches and to raise the discipline of parish priests.

In 973 Edgar was crowned at Bath. Wikipedia calls this the high point of Dunstan's career and says that the service he devised forms the basis of the British coronation ceremony today. The Catholic Encyclopedia adds that Edgar was said to have been forbidden to wear a crown for seven years as a penance, but it points out that the dates do not fit.

The Last Years

When Edgar died in 975, a dispute over the succession followed. The Catholic Encyclopedia says that Dunstan secured the crowning of Edward. Edward was murdered at Corfe Castle in March 978, and when Æthelred was crowned on Low Sunday of that year Dunstan rebuked the new king sharply and then withdrew to Canterbury. That was his last public act of state. He is said afterwards to have helped move Edward's relics to Shaftesbury, to have supported a bishop's appointment and to have won peace for Rochester.

He died at Canterbury on Saturday, 19 May 988, after receiving the last rites, aged about seventy-nine. The sources differ on how he foresaw his death. Wikipedia says that he announced it in a sermon on Ascension Day, and the Catholic Encyclopedia says that he was warned by a vision on the eve of the feast.

Relics and Veneration

Dunstan was buried in Canterbury Cathedral. When the cathedral burned in 1074, Archbishop Lanfranc moved the relics to a tomb beside the high altar of the new church, and in 1508 Archbishop Warham opened the tomb and found them. Warham's examination also showed that the claim of Glastonbury to have taken the body during the Danish sack of Canterbury in 1012 was false. His shrine was destroyed at the English Reformation. According to Wikipedia, until the rise of Thomas Becket he was England's favourite saint.

Canonization

Dunstan did not become a saint through the papal process we know today. In 1029 the Synod of Winchester ordered his feast to be kept throughout England on 19 May. Wikipedia gives 1029 as the year of his canonization, while the Catholic Encyclopedia describes no separate process. This account therefore states only that his feast was established in 1029.

The Will of God He Sought

Dunstan's road was not a straight one. He was slandered and thrown into a pit, driven into exile by a king, and then brought home to become archbishop. He was a man who hammered metal and played the harp in a tiny cell, and with the same hands he took up the work of building the Church of his country beside its kings. Wikipedia reports that the coronation service he devised still leaves its mark today. His life shows that the will of God works in the quiet of a hermit's room and in the busy places of government alike. People remembered him for centuries because, even when he stood before a king to rebuke him, he never stopped being a monk.

Reflection

First, if there has been a time when you were hurt by misunderstanding or slander, quietly lay that time before the Lord.

Second, consider whether you could offer one task you do with your hands today, such as cooking, cleaning, writing or mending, as a prayer.

Third, ask yourself whether there is a true word you owe to someone with power or influence, and how you could speak it with love.

Fourth, offer a short prayer today for something broken that needs rebuilding, such as a relationship in your family or community that has long been neglected.

Lord, you showed us Saint Dunstan, who suffered slander and exile, yet held fast to prayer and labour in a small cell and helped to build up the Church beside kings. Teach us to offer all the work of our hands as prayer, to keep hope when we are wronged, and to speak the truth in love where it is needed. Through the intercession of Saint Dunstan, help us to carry out faithfully to the end the work you have entrusted to us. Amen.
