Sanctus Vergilius · 700

566. St. Virgil of Salzburg

Sanctus Vergilius · about 700 to 784 (789 also given) · Ireland, Francia, Bavaria, Salzburg, Carinthia · abbot · bishop · missionary · canonized 1233 · feast 27 November

Around the year 745, an Irish abbot crossed the sea, saying he meant to visit the Holy Land. He never reached Jerusalem. He stayed in the Frankish lands, was summoned by the Duke of Bavaria to Salzburg on the northern edge of the Alps, and spent the rest of his decades there until his death. The name Virgil comes from the Latin Vergilius; in Ireland he is said to have been called Feirgil or Fearghal.

A Wider Angle on the Age — Irish Monks Crossing the Sea in the Eighth Century

In the eighth century many Irish monks and scholars were at work on the Continent. The Catholic Encyclopedia says that Virgil, like many Irish pilgrims, set out for the Holy Land and settled in Frankish territory instead. In those years Pippin held the real power at the Frankish court, and in the east the Bavarian duke Odilo was ordering the Church in his lands. Men formed in the learning and faith of Irish monasteries found their way into that gap. Virgil's life sits in the middle of that current.

An Abbot in Ireland

The Catholic Encyclopedia reports that Virgil was a descendant of Niall of the Nine Hostages. It gives no birth date or birthplace; English Wikipedia puts his birth at about 700. According to the Annals of the Four Masters and the Annals of Ulster, he was abbot of Aghaboe in Queen's County, Ireland. Wikipedia adds that he was probably educated at Iona, that he is also called bishop of Ossory, and that he bore the nickname "the Geometer." The schooling at Iona is only a probable inference.

In the Frankish Lands

The Catholic Encyclopedia says he left Ireland about 745, intending to visit the Holy Land, but settled in Francia. The Vatican State's saint-of-the-day note puts the departure at about 743. Pippin, then mayor of the palace, received him warmly, and Virgil spent two years at Cressy near Compiègne. English Wikipedia says he became an adviser to Pippin and probably drew on an Irish collection of canon law in connection with the royal anointing of 751; that, again, is a probable inference.

Called to Bavaria, Settled at Salzburg

Duke Odilo invited him to Bavaria. The Catholic Encyclopedia says that within a year or two he became abbot of St. Peter's in Salzburg. English Wikipedia also credits him with founding a monastery at Chiemsee. The Encyclopedia adds that out of humility he concealed his episcopal orders, so that a fellow Irishman, Bishop Dobdagrecus, performed the bishop's duties for him. The Vatican note says Boniface objected to his appointment as bishop and that Virgil was consecrated only after Boniface's death. The Encyclopedia puts his accession as bishop in 766 or 767, while the Vatican note says about 765, so the sources differ.

Two Quarrels with Boniface

Virgil clashed with Boniface, the apostle of Germany, on two matters. The first concerned baptism. A priest had baptized using garbled Latin, and Virgil held the sacrament valid. Boniface appealed to Pope Zachary, who is said to have decided in Virgil's favor.

The second concerned the shape of the world. Boniface reported to the pope that Virgil taught something contrary to Scripture. English Wikipedia adds that Boniface also accused him of stirring up discord with Duke Odilo. Zachary's reply was conditional: if it were clearly shown that Virgil taught that another world lay beneath the earth, with other people living in it, a council should be called and he should be removed from the priesthood. The Catholic Encyclopedia notes that Virgil's treatise is lost, that he was cleared of teaching anything against Scripture, and that Boniface probably misunderstood him. What exactly he taught cannot be settled, because his writing has not survived.

Shepherd of Salzburg

After Boniface was martyred, Virgil became bishop of Salzburg. The Catholic Encyclopedia says he labored to build up his diocese and carried the faith into neighboring pagan lands, especially Carinthia. The Vatican note describes him as a learned and practical pastor who gave himself to the Christian formation of the people and to the care of the poor. The same note says he built the first Salzburg cathedral in 774 and founded the monastery of San Candido in South Tyrol. These two points appear only in the Vatican note among the sources checked here.

Canonization and Veneration

The Catholic Encyclopedia and English Wikipedia say that Pope Gregory IX canonized Virgil in 1233; the Vatican note gives 1232, a year earlier. He died on 27 November, which is his feast. As to the year, English Wikipedia and the Vatican note give 784, while the Catholic Encyclopedia gives 789, so the sources disagree. The Vatican note says his relics rest in Salzburg Cathedral. He is said to be venerated in both the Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox Churches.

The Will of God He Sought

Virgil set out for the Holy Land, but the place God led him to was the foothills of the Alps. He lost the road he had planned and received the place he was given, and from there he led a monastery, cared for a diocese, and preached to the neighboring peoples. By the Catholic Encyclopedia's account, he was a man who did not wish to put his office first. When he was misunderstood and accused, he left the judgment to the pope. For him, God's will seems to have lain not in reaching a chosen destination but in staying beside those entrusted to him when the road changed.

Meditation

First, recall a time when your plans turned onto an unexpected road. Whom did you meet along it?

Second, when you have been misunderstood, ask whether you were busy defending yourself or kept a door open for the Church's judgment and for dialogue.

Third, ask for a heart that thinks of the people entrusted to you before title or name.

Fourth, if a neighbor beside you is asking about the way of faith today, consider how you might help.

Lord, you gave Saint Virgil a heart to care for a diocese in a strange land and to bring the Gospel to his neighbors. Keep us from losing heart when our plans change, and help us to look after the poor and those who seek to learn in the place where we are put. Through the prayers of Saint Virgil, let us respect the judgment of the Church even in the midst of misunderstanding, and bring the joy of the Gospel to our neighbors. Amen.
