Sanctus Wilfridus · 633/634

565. St. Wilfrid of York

Sanctus Wilfridus · about 633/634 to 709/710 · Northumbria · York, Ripon, Hexham, Selsey · bishop · founder of monasteries · venerated saint · feast 12 October

Around the age of fourteen, a Northumbrian boy fell out with his stepmother and left home for the court of King Oswiu. That boy grew up to be a bishop who was driven from his see more than once, and each time he turned his eyes toward Rome. In 709 or 710, at about seventy-five, Wilfrid visited Oundle in the English Midlands and died there. His body was laid to rest at Ripon.

A Wider Angle on the Age — The Church in Seventh-Century Northumbria

In the middle of the seventh century the Church in Northumbria held two traditions side by side: one linked directly to Rome, the other brought by Irish monks. They kept different customs, among them the method of reckoning the date of Easter, and the Synod of Whitby in 664 took up the matter. Wilfrid's life is the story of a man who stood on the Roman side at that parting of the ways. The chief source for it is the Life of Wilfrid by Eddius, whom Wilfrid brought from Canterbury to York in 669, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia. But that Life was written to honor Wilfrid, so it is best read alongside Bede's Ecclesiastical History, which treats the same age more evenly.

A Boy and His Schooling

The Catholic Encyclopedia says Wilfrid was born in 634 into a Northumbrian noble family. English Wikipedia puts his birth around 633. Both sources mention the quarrel with his stepmother. He came to the notice of Queen Eanflæd, who sent him to the monastery of Lindisfarne; Wikipedia and Britannica date this to about 648. Later he set out for Rome in the company of Benedict Biscop. Britannica records a stay at Canterbury in 652, and the Catholic Encyclopedia says that at Rome he studied under Boniface, the pope's archdeacon. On the way home he spent time at Lyons under Bishop Annemund and received the tonsure there. The bishop wished to keep him, marry him to a niece, and make him his heir, but Wilfrid held to his wish to become a priest. Persecution soon broke out at Lyons and Annemund was killed. The sources disagree about how long Wilfrid stayed there and when, so we do not fix it.

Ripon and Whitby

Wilfrid returned to Northumbria in the late 650s. Alhfrith, son of King Oswiu, gave him the newly founded monastery at Ripon, and there he established the Rule of Saint Benedict in full. The Irish-trained monks who had been at Ripon withdrew to the north. At the Synod of Whitby in 664 Wilfrid was a leading voice for the Roman side, and the assembly largely agreed with it. Bishop Colman and his monks left Northumbria.

Made a Bishop

Wilfrid was chosen bishop in Colman's place. He declined to be consecrated by the northern bishops and crossed to Gaul, where he was consecrated at Compiègne. The Catholic Encyclopedia says it is not quite clear whether his long delay in France was his own fault. When he came back in 666, his ship was driven by a storm onto the coast of Sussex, where the pagan inhabitants nearly killed him. In his absence the see of York had been given to Chad. Wilfrid withdrew to Ripon, and in 669 Archbishop Theodore of Canterbury asked Chad to step aside, so that Wilfrid returned as Bishop of York.

What He Built and Planted

In these years Wilfrid raised great churches at Hexham and Ripon and rebuilt the minster at York. The Catholic Encyclopedia says his public manner was magnificent while his private life was simple. Wikipedia reports that he brought in Roman chant, with two choirs singing in turn. It adds that some regard him as the first in England to bring in the Benedictine Rule, though this is likely rather than fully documented.

Driven Out, and Rome

In 677 or 678 Wilfrid fell out with King Ecgfrith and lost his see. The Catholic Encyclopedia says the king was displeased when Wilfrid advised the queen, Etheldrida, to enter a monastery rather than live with her husband. Archbishop Theodore divided Wilfrid's diocese into several. Wilfrid would not accept this and appealed to Rome. Wikipedia says that on the way he wintered in Frisia and tried to preach to the pagan Frisians. In 679 a synod under Pope Agatho ordered his restoration and the return of his monasteries, though the new dioceses stayed as they were. Yet on his return the king had him imprisoned, and then banished. The Catholic Encyclopedia places the prison at Bamburgh.

The Sussex Mission

Wilfrid went into exile in the south, in Sussex, the very land where a storm had cast him up years before. According to Wikipedia he took shelter with King Æthelwealh and worked among the South Saxons, and he founded a monastery at Selsey. Bede is said to report that he taught the hungry people to fish, and that after a long drought rain fell as he baptized converts. Around 686 Cædwalla of Wessex conquered Sussex and became his patron, and Wilfrid carried the mission to the Isle of Wight.

His Last Years

When King Ecgfrith fell in battle with the Picts, Wilfrid was called back to Northumbria in 686, helped, it is said, by Theodore's good offices. But in 691 King Aldfrith drove him out again. For many years Wilfrid carried on as a bishop in Mercia with the king's leave. The Council of Austerfield in 702 ruled against him, and he went to Rome once more. Rome's judgment favored him, and the Catholic Encyclopedia dates this to 704. Wikipedia says Pope John VI ordered that he be restored. On the road home he fell ill at Meaux and recovered. A synod in 705 gave back Hexham and Ripon but not York. The Catholic Encyclopedia calls this an unsatisfying outcome that Wilfrid nevertheless accepted, because the principle of Roman authority had been upheld.

He died at Oundle in 709 or 710. Wikipedia mentions an argument, built on Eddius and one scholar's calculation, for Thursday 24 April 710, but the date is not settled. He was buried at Ripon.

Veneration and Canonization

Wilfrid is honored in the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion. The Catholic Encyclopedia and Britannica call him a saint and give him a high place among the saints of England. These sources give no date or formal process for his canonization. His feast is kept on 12 October, though some medieval calendars gave 24 April, which Wikipedia suggests may have been the day of the translation of his relics. It reports that after King Eadred burned the church at Ripon in 948, Archbishop Oda took the relics to Canterbury, though other accounts tell it differently and the sources do not agree.

The Will of God He Sought

What stands out in Wilfrid's life is a stubborn loyalty to one thing. He held fast to the belief that the Church is one body, and he gave that belief the shape of union with Rome. Being driven out again and again did not make him let go of it. Even on the roads of exile, the tradition says, he went on with his mission, in Frisia and in Sussex. For him the will of God seems to have lain not in holding a post but in doing the work given to him wherever he stood. Yet historians have also judged that he was not always humble, and we should remember that Eddius wrote to honor him.

Reflection

First, if there is a place or a name you struggle to protect, consider whether it has come to stand ahead of the work God has given you.

Second, recall a time when you were pushed aside against your will. Did you look for what you could still do in that place?

Third, think about what you might lay down for the unity of the Church.

Fourth, when a work must be closed before it is finished, ask for a heart that can say the principle at least was kept.

Lord, you gave Saint Wilfrid perseverance for the unity of your Church and courage to preach the Gospel in strange lands. Keep us from losing heart when we are driven out or set aside, and help us to do faithfully the work given us where we stand. Through the prayers of Saint Wilfrid, let us cherish the unity of the Church and bring the joy of the Gospel to our neighbors. Amen.

The stay at Canterbury (652), Frisia, the synod of Pope Agatho in 679, the monastery at Selsey, Bede's fishing and rain stories, the second expulsion (691) and the Council of Austerfield (702), Pope John VI, the discussion of the date of death, and the account of the feast and relics follow English Wikipedia "Wilfrid"; the year of birth and the year of entry to Lindisfarne were also checked against Britannica "Saint Wilfrid". HONEST LABELS — (1) His birth is given as about 633 or as 634. (2) The year of death is 709 or 710, and the sources name both Oundle and Ripon, so we have not settled on one. (3) The length and timing of his stay at Lyons do not agree between sources and are left out. (4) The dating of the appeals to Rome differs between sources, so the Catholic Encyclopedia's 704 is given alongside. (5) The date and process of a formal canonization could not be confirmed and are not stated. (6) The imprisonment at Bamburgh appears in the Catholic Encyclopedia alone. (7) The original texts of Eddius and Bede could not be read directly in this run. (8) The Catholic Encyclopedia entry dates from 1907 to 1912 and may carry older views. (9) The account stays within the Catholic record. Duplicate check — searched day_saint_map_350.json and homepage_saints.json for "Wilfrid", "Wilfred", and the Korean spelling on 14 October 2026.
