564. St. Matilda of Ringelheim
In 936 King Henry I of Saxony died and was buried at Quedlinburg. His widow, Matilda, lived on for nearly thirty more years. In that time she was parted from her sons over a question of property, and she gave her energy to founding convents and caring for the poor. She died in the convent at Quedlinburg on 14 March 968 and was laid to rest beside her husband.
A Wider Angle on the Age — A Royal House in Tenth-Century Saxony
In the early tenth century the eastern Frankish kingdom was held together loosely, and the great dukes were strong. Matilda's husband, Henry, became Duke of Saxony in 912 and was chosen king in 918, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia. He is often called Henry the Fowler. Matilda's life runs alongside the years in which this young royal house found its footing. The main sources for her life are two medieval Lives of the saint and the chronicle known as The Deeds of the Saxons. A saint's Life is written to praise her virtues, so its pious episodes cannot be weighed like plain records.
Childhood and Marriage
English Wikipedia places her birth around 892, probably at Enger in Saxony, and names her parents as Count Dietrich and Reinhild, a family said to descend from the Saxon duke Widukind. The Catholic Encyclopedia gives about 895 and names no parents. The sources also differ on where she was raised. Wikipedia says she grew up at Herford Abbey under her grandmother, who bore the same name. The Catholic Encyclopedia says she was brought up at the monastery of Erfurt. Either way, she received her early formation in a monastic setting.
In 909 Henry took her as his wife. The Catholic Encyclopedia reports that his earlier marriage to Hathburg had been declared invalid, after which he asked for Matilda's hand and gave her Walhausen as a wedding gift. Wikipedia puts her age at about seventeen.
As Queen
The Catholic Encyclopedia describes Matilda as humble, pious, and generous. It says she defended the oppressed and had a good influence on her husband. The couple had five children who are named in both sources: Otto, later the Emperor Otto I; Henry, who became Duke of Bavaria; Bruno, who became Archbishop of Cologne; Gerberga, who married King Louis IV of France; and Hedwig, who became the mother of Hugh Capet. In 929, Wikipedia reports, Henry settled on his wife a widow's portion of lands that included Quedlinburg, Pöhlde, Nordhausen, Grona, and Duderstadt.
Widowhood
When Henry died in 936 the question of succession came up at once. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, Matilda favored her younger son Henry for the throne rather than Otto, the eldest. Otto was nevertheless elected and crowned on 8 August that year. The younger Henry later rose in revolt, then submitted, and at his mother's request was made Duke of Bavaria.
After that, both sons turned against her. The Catholic Encyclopedia says they accused her of draining the crown's wealth through her almsgiving. That was their claim, not an established fact. Matilda gave up the lands she had inherited and withdrew to Enger. When misfortune struck her sons, the story goes, they called her back and asked her forgiveness. Wikipedia tells the matter a little differently: from 936 to 946, it says, Otto disputed her dower, and she went into exile until Otto's queen, Eadgyth, brokered a reconciliation. Scholars still argue about the nature and timing of this quarrel, and the two sources do not agree in every detail.
Her Foundations
Matilda built churches and founded or supported monasteries. The Catholic Encyclopedia names Quedlinburg, Nordhausen, Enger, and Pöhlde, and says she was especially fond of Nordhausen. Wikipedia dates the founding of the abbey at Quedlinburg to 936, the convent at Enger to 947, and the convent at Nordhausen, her last, to 961. In 966 she handed the leadership of Quedlinburg to her granddaughter, also named Matilda, who became its first abbess. In this way she made sure that a community she had founded would have someone to carry it forward.
Her Death
After a long illness Matilda died at Quedlinburg on 14 March 968. The Catholic Encyclopedia says she died in the convent of Saints Servatius and Dionysius and was buried next to her husband.
Veneration and Canonization
The Catholic Encyclopedia says that Matilda was venerated as a saint immediately after her death. Neither source gives a date or a formal process for her canonization. Wikipedia notes that she is honored in both the Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox churches and says only that her canonization came after 968. Her feast is kept on 14 March.
The Will of God She Sought
The most striking thing in the life of Matilda is the question of what one does with what one holds. As queen she had wealth and land, and the tradition says she spent them on the poor and on religious communities. When her own family blamed her for it, she gave up the lands and stepped aside. The tradition adds that she did not hold her sons' conduct against them and received them back. For her, the will of God did not lie in guarding property. It lay in giving, and in keeping her family bonds open even when she felt wronged. We should add that no one can now check how closely the virtues described in a saint's Life match the life she actually lived.
Reflection
First, consider what you hold that you could share with a neighbor. What is it that you are keeping, and what is it kept for?
Second, think of a time when your family misunderstood you. Did you choose to defend yourself or to stay silent?
Third, think of welcoming back someone who asks for forgiveness. Is there a person to whom you have closed the door?
Fourth, think of the care it takes to appoint someone to carry on a work you began. Will the good you do continue after you?
Lord, you gave Saint Matilda a generous heart for the poor and the strength to bear pain within her family. Teach us the joy of sharing what we have, and keep us from closing the road to reconciliation in the midst of misunderstanding and quarrel. Through the prayers of Saint Matilda, let us do our work faithfully and live with love for our neighbor. Amen.
