Sanctus Mauritius · 3

563. St. Maurice

Sanctus Mauritius · late 3rd to early 4th century · Agaunum (modern Saint-Maurice, Switzerland) · Roman soldier · martyr · venerated saint · feast 22 September

There is an old story told in the Rhône valley of the Alps. A unit of the Roman army, sent into Gaul on the emperor's orders, laid down its arms when it was commanded to harm Christians. The man who led it is remembered as Maurice. In the fifth century Eucherius, bishop of Lyons, wrote the story down, and for many centuries afterward large parts of Europe honored Maurice as a martyr.

A Wider Angle on the Age — Persecution and the Frontier Army

From the late third century into the early fourth, the Roman Empire was governed by several emperors at once, and persecution of Christians rose and fell with their policies. The Catholic Encyclopedia places this event at the beginning of the fourth century, though the date is disputed. The same article reports the view of Paul Allard, who put the martyrdom before 292, and Britannica gives about 286. The commonly repeated year of 303 sits apart from both. The difference comes from a basic fact: no writer of the time recorded the event. The earliest detailed account is a letter written around 450 by Eucherius to Bishop Salvius, which comes roughly a century and a half after the events it describes.

The Story as Eucherius Tells It

According to Eucherius, in his account of the martyrs of Agaunum, the legion Maurice commanded was made up of Christians from Egyptian Thebes. The emperor Maximian sent it into Gaul to help put down a revolt. Britannica summarizes the rebels as Christian peasants. The soldiers refused to fight people who shared their faith and held back near Agaunum. The furious emperor ordered one man in ten to be put to death. When the rest would not change their minds, he ordered everyone killed. Along with Maurice, the names Vitalis, Candidus, and Exuperius are handed down. The Catholic Encyclopedia notes that the speeches the soldiers make in the story were probably composed by Eucherius himself, which is a useful reminder that a pious narrative can carry both memory and literary shaping.

What Historians Ask

For a long time the story was taken as plain history. Since the Reformation it has been argued over. The Catholic Encyclopedia admits that the event may have involved a smaller detachment rather than a whole legion. Britannica notes that excavations at Saint-Maurice-en-Valais between 1944 and 1949 renewed scholarly interest. In 1956 D. van Berchem suggested that the written Passion may rest on an oral account going back to Theodore, a fourth-century bishop of Octodurum. On that reading, Maurice died with about seventy soldiers under his command, who were neither Theban nor a full legion. Because specialists remain divided, this page does not fix the size or origin of the unit. It tells what the tradition says and marks where the evidence is thin.

A Church, Then an Abbey

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, public attention turned to these martyrs only under Theodore of Octodurum, who served from 369 to 391, long after the events. Eucherius says that Theodore learned of the martyrs' presence through a revelation and built a basilica in their honor. The encyclopedia treats the revelation as part of the tradition, not as verified history. An abbey grew up around the church. Sigismund of Burgundy gave gifts and a new foundation to the community. Under Abbot Ambrosius, in 522 or 523 at the latest, the monks began the laus perennis, the unbroken singing of psalms in which choirs took turns day and night. The encyclopedia says this "custom of Agaunum" spread through Gaul. The abbey itself gave up the practice early in the ninth century.

How the Honor Spread

Britannica records the cult of Maurice in Switzerland, along the Rhine, and in northern Italy. It lists relics at Brzeg in Poland and at Turin in Italy. It also describes him as patron saint of the Swiss Guard of the Vatican. Among the treasures of Agaunum is a reliquary decorated with glass mosaic and precious stones. Scholars still discuss its date, and the Catholic Encyclopedia quotes the view that its inscription is no earlier than 563. The Roman Church remembers Maurice on 22 September.

The Will of God He Sought

The clearest thing in the story of Maurice is a question about how far obedience goes. A soldier is a person who follows orders. Yet the tradition says that Maurice refused the one order that would have turned his sword against fellow believers. He did not stage a revolt and he did not run away. According to the story, he stayed where he was and said he would not do it. For him the will of God came before the command of the empire, and he did not dodge the cost. The details of the event shift between tradition and scholarship, but the outline has been kept in memory in an Alpine valley for more than fifteen hundred years.

Reflection

First, think of a time when your duty and your conscience pulled apart. What did you put first?

Second, think about protecting those who share your faith. When believers near you are in trouble, where do you stand?

Third, think of the way Maurice stayed in place without noise. Can you say a quiet no in front of something wrong?

Fourth, think of martyrs who were honored only long after they died. Do you remember those who keep faith today without being known?

Lord, you gave Saint Maurice and his companions the strength to put your will before human commands and to keep the faith to the end. Help us to do our work faithfully, and never to avoid the place our conscience asks of us. Let us not turn away from neighbors in need. Through the prayers of Saint Maurice, make us witnesses to Christ even in trials. Amen.

Sources — The tradition of Maurice and the martyrdom at Agaunum, the letter of Eucherius (about 450), the tradition of Bishop Theodore's basilica, the abbey under Sigismund and Ambrosius and the laus perennis, the scholarly disagreement over date and size, and the reliquary follow the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia article "Agaunum" (1907) and the same entry in the Catholic Answers encyclopedia. Maximian and the execution of one man in ten, the names Vitalis, Candidus, and Exuperius, the date of about 286, the 1944-49 excavations, van Berchem's 1956 proposal, the regions of veneration, the location of relics, the patronage of the Swiss Guard, and the feast day follow Britannica, "Saint Maurice." Honesty labels — (1) No contemporary record of the martyrdom exists, and Eucherius's letter is the earliest detailed account. (2) The date is given as about 286, before 292, or 303 in different views, and none is fixed here. (3) Whether the unit was a legion or a detachment, and whether it was Theban, is marked as disputed. (4) The soldiers' speeches are probably Eucherius's composition, as the encyclopedia says. (5) Theodore's revelation is given as tradition only. (6) The text of Eucherius's letter and the original Passion were not read directly in this run. (7) The Catholic Encyclopedia entry dates from 1907-1912 and may carry outdated views.
