Sanctus Leander Hispalensis · 534

559. St. Leander of Seville

Sanctus Leander Hispalensis · c. 534–600/601 · born at Carthago Spartaria (today's Cartagena), died at Seville in Hispania · monk, then bishop · Bishop of Seville · venerated saint · feast 13 March

In the city of Seville in southern Spain there once served two brothers as bishops, one after the other. The younger, Isidore, is famous as a teacher of the Middle Ages. The elder, Leander, held the see first. He led the Church in the years when the Visigothic people turned from Arian teaching to the Catholic faith, and his work was not one great event. It was the labor of many years, carried on among kings and bishops, monasteries and schools.

The earliest testimony about Leander comes from his brother Isidore. The Catholic Encyclopedia and English Wikipedia retell his life from that testimony and from later study. This page follows the same sources, and it keeps the points that are firmly dated apart from the points on which the sources differ.

A Wider Angle on the Age — A Peninsula in Two Communions

In the later sixth century the Visigoths ruled the Iberian peninsula. Their kings and nobles followed Arianism, which did not confess the full divinity of Christ. The Hispano-Roman people who had lived in the land for generations were, for the most part, Catholics who professed the Nicene Creed. Two communities of faith stood side by side in the same cities.

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, Leander's family moved from Carthago Spartaria to Seville about the year 554. Some lives of the saints say that his father, Severian, was governor of that city, but the Encyclopedia points out that Isidore calls him only a citizen. The governor story therefore cannot be treated as established. Leander had two brothers, Isidore and Fulgentius, and a sister, Florentina, and all four are venerated as saints in the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions.

From Monk to Bishop

The Encyclopedia says that Leander first became a Benedictine monk and then, in 579, bishop of Seville. English Wikipedia places his entry into the monastic life around 576. Both dates are approximate. He founded a school at Seville, and it is said to have become a center of Catholic learning and sound doctrine.

He also wrote a rule for his sister, titled "On the Training of Virgins and Contempt for the World" (De institutione virginum et contemptu mundi). It is one of only two of his works that survive, and it is commonly called the rule for nuns. The Encyclopedia reports that Florentina directed forty convents and a thousand nuns. That figure is handed down in the tradition and cannot be checked independently.

Exile and a Lasting Friendship

At this time Hermenegild, the eldest son of the Visigothic king Leovigild, married Ingunthis, a Catholic princess. The Encyclopedia says that Leander helped to bring Hermenegild to the Catholic faith and defended him against his father's reprisals. English Wikipedia stresses that these events were tied up with political conflict. Hermenegild was put to death in 585.

Leander was exiled by the king, and he is said to have stayed in Byzantium from 579 to 582. The exact dates of his going and his return are not known, and the suggestion that he tried to persuade the emperor to move against the Arian king is only a possibility that has never been proved. In that foreign city he met the man who would later become Pope Gregory the Great, then serving as papal legate at the imperial court. The two became close friends, and some of Gregory's letters to Leander survive. English Wikipedia adds that Gregory later sent Leander a copy of his work on pastoral care.

The Council of Toledo

Leovigild's son Reccared, who succeeded him, turned to the Catholic faith. The Encyclopedia says that Leander had a share in this conversion and kept his influence over the king for years afterward. In 589 the Third Council of Toledo met, and the Visigothic kingdom renounced Arianism. Leander is said to have convened the council and to have given its closing sermon. That sermon is preserved under the title "Homily on the Triumph of the Church for the Conversion of the Goths." Isidore wrote of his brother that through his faith and zeal the Gothic people were converted from Arianism to the Catholic faith.

English Wikipedia reports that Leander introduced the custom of reciting the Nicene Creed at Mass in order to strengthen the faith against Arianism. After the council he held a synod at Seville and kept working to clear away what remained of the Arian movement.

Death and Veneration

Leander died at Seville on 13 March in the year 600 or 601, and the sources differ on the year. He is said to have received the pallium in August 599. The Catholic Encyclopedia lists him in the old Acta Sanctorum under 13 March. English Wikipedia reports 13 March as his feast in the current Catholic calendar, 27 February in the older Roman usage, and 13 November in the national calendar of Spain. This page gives 13 March, the day of his death. He lived long before any formal process of canonization existed, and he stands among the saints through the veneration of the faithful.

The Will of God He Sought

The will of God that Leander sought was a way of gathering a divided faith into one. Driven from the king's court and living in a strange land, he did not let go of the Church's work, and after his return he took part in a council where king and bishops met in one place. The work was not done by one man alone. Yet Isidore wrote that his brother's faith and zeal brought a whole people to the Catholic faith.

Meditation

First, consider that Leander passed from the quiet of the monastery to the responsibility of a bishop. Do I accept the place entrusted to me, or do I avoid it?

Second, consider that in exile he became a friend of Gregory. Among the people I have met in unfamiliar places, who is the friend God has sent me?

Third, consider that his work rested on patience over many years. Can I keep faith with a task whose fruit I do not yet see?

Fourth, consider that he wrote a rule for his sister and founded a school. What small ground am I preparing so that the faith may be handed on to those near me?

O God, we praise you, who gave wisdom and patience to Bishop Leander of Seville and gathered a scattered people into one faith. Grant that we too may serve faithfully in the place you have given us, and become instruments of unity among those who are divided. By the intercession of Saint Leander, protect the shepherds of your Church. Amen.

Sources — Leander's birth (about 534 at Carthago Spartaria) and death (13 March, in 600 or 601), the move of Severian's family to Seville about 554, the limits of Isidore's testimony on the governor tradition, the siblings Isidore, Fulgentius and Florentina, his start as a Benedictine monk and his appointment as bishop of Seville in 579, Hermenegild and Ingunthis, the stay in Byzantium from 579 to 582 and the friendship with Gregory, the conversion of Reccared and the closing sermon at the Third Council of Toledo, the synod of Seville, the pallium in August 599, and the two surviving works, the rule for nuns and the homily, follow the Catholic Encyclopedia, "Leander of Seville" (New Advent, 1910). The approximate date of entering the monastic life (about 576), the introduction of the Nicene Creed at Mass, the several feast dates (13 March, 27 February, 13 November) and Gregory's gift of his pastoral work were checked against English Wikipedia, "Leander of Seville," and the Catholic Answers encyclopedia entry. HONEST LABELS — (1) The timing of the stay in Byzantium and of the return, and the possibility that he asked the emperor to intervene, are given as the sources say, which is that they are uncertain. (2) The number of convents and nuns under Florentina is given only as tradition. (3) The original texts of Isidore and of Leander's own writings could not be consulted directly in this run, and the page depends on the summaries of the Encyclopedia and Wikipedia. (4) The text keeps within the Catholic record. Duplicate check — searched "Leander" in day_saint_map_350.json and homepage_saints.json (2026-10-08).
