553. St. Cuthbert of Lindisfarne
In the north of England, in the city of Durham, a great cathedral stands, and deep inside it lies the tomb of St. Cuthbert. For more than a thousand years pilgrims have come to this place. Cuthbert was not born in Durham and never lived there. The places he knew were small islands lashed by North Sea wind. Yet the city and the cathedral are remembered as having grown up around the spot where his remains finally came to rest.
This account follows the threads on which the old records agree. Where the sources give different dates, it says so.
A Wider Angle on the Age — The Boy Who Watched the Sheep
Cuthbert is dated to c.634 or c.635. The Catholic Encyclopedia gives c.635, English Wikipedia c.634. His birthplace is also disputed: Wikipedia names the area of Dunbar in what is now eastern Scotland, while the Catholic Encyclopedia places him near Melrose. What is certain is that the Northumbrian kingdom had been Christian for only a short time and that its politics were rough.
Christianity in the north of England was then growing under the influence of monks who had come from Ireland. The monastery on the island of Lindisfarne was its center, and Aidan, its bishop, is remembered as a major figure in the evangelization of the region.
According to the old accounts, Cuthbert was tending sheep as a boy when, one night in 651, he saw a vision of angels carrying a soul up to heaven. He later learned, it is said, that this was the night Bishop Aidan died. Both the Catholic Encyclopedia and Wikipedia give this as the beginning of his monastic vocation. The scene comes from the tradition preserved in Bede's life of him, and it is better read as a story handed down than as an eyewitness report.
He did not go straight to a monastery. The Catholic Encyclopedia notes that Northumbria was then at war with King Penda of Mercia and that Cuthbert first served as a soldier. When the fighting ended, it says, he arrived at the gate of Melrose on horseback, spear in hand. From then on he lived at Melrose as a monk under the guidance of Prior Boisil.
To Lindisfarne, and to Farne
In the 660s his life changed. When Boisil died of the plague, Cuthbert took over as prior of Melrose. The sources disagree on the date of Boisil's death: the Catholic Encyclopedia says 664, Wikipedia 661. Both also report that Cuthbert spent a time as guest-master at the monastery of Ripon.
In 664 the Synod of Whitby decided that the Church of Northumbria would follow Roman usage for the date of Easter and for its customs. Cuthbert had been formed in the Irish tradition, but he is said to have accepted the decision. The Catholic Encyclopedia says that Abbot Eata sent him to Lindisfarne to establish the Roman customs there, and that he did so with gentle tact and patience. At a time when monks of different traditions had to live under one roof, this was no small task.
At Lindisfarne his work did not stay inside the monastery walls. The old records describe him visiting the believers of remote country villages to teach and care for them. The Orthodox life of him in the Great Horologion likewise calls him a true priest of Christ, serving both his brethren and the neglected Christians of isolated villages.
Yet he longed for a deeper life of prayer. In 676 he withdrew to an island near Lindisfarne, and then to Inner Farne, in the sea opposite Bamburgh, where he lived alone. At first he received visitors, but later, Wikipedia says, he gave his blessing only through a small window.
A Bishopric Accepted Reluctantly
In 684 a synod of bishops at Twyford elected Cuthbert bishop. He did not want to leave Farne. Wikipedia reports that he agreed only when King Ecgfrith came to the island himself with a delegation to persuade him. He took the see of Lindisfarne rather than Hexham, exchanging places with Eata. At Easter 685, Archbishop Theodore of Canterbury consecrated him at York in the presence of six bishops.
His time as bishop lasted less than two years. The Catholic Encyclopedia says it bore remarkable fruit in that short span. Toward the end of 686, sensing that death was near, he resigned his see and went back to his cell on Farne. There he fell ill and died on 20 March 687. He was buried at Lindisfarne.
The Long Journey After the Grave
His story does not end with his death. When the tomb was opened in 698 for the translation of his relics, his body was found incorrupt. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Wikipedia and the Orthodox life all report this, and Bede recorded it. The news carried his name across England. People called him the "Wonder-worker of Britain."
When the Danes attacked in 875, the monks of Lindisfarne left the island carrying the saint's coffin. The Catholic Encyclopedia says they wandered through the northern lands for about seven years and settled at Chester-le-Street in 883. Wikipedia likewise says the community stayed there for a little more than a century.
Near the end of the tenth century, with new raids feared, the monks set out to take the relics to Ripon. Wikipedia reports that in 995 the wagon carrying the coffin would not move near Durham, and that the community took this as the will of God and settled there. The Catholic Encyclopedia also tells of a new miracle at Durham that fixed it as his permanent resting place. This is a tradition handed down. A small chapel, a wooden church and then a stone church followed, the last completed around 998–999, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia.
In 1104, during work on the cathedral, the tomb was opened for a translation of the relics. The Orthodox life and the Catholic Encyclopedia say the body was again found incorrupt. Wikipedia adds that a small Gospel of John was found in the tomb. It is now known as the St. Cuthbert Gospel and is described as the oldest Western book to keep its original binding. The Catholic Encyclopedia says the head of King St. Oswald was laid with him, which is why Cuthbert is sometimes shown in sacred art holding a king's head.
In 1542, under Henry VIII, the shrine was plundered. The Orthodox life says the body was again found incorrupt; the Catholic Encyclopedia says the monks are reported to have hidden the relics. The sources describe this last episode differently, so it is best taken as one strand of tradition.
Canonization
Cuthbert lived long before the formal process of papal canonization existed. Veneration began immediately after his death. The Catholic Encyclopedia says the whole English people honored him, and that kings supported his shrine and asked for his prayers. Wikipedia describes him as the most prominent saint of medieval England until the martyrdom of Thomas Becket in 1170. His feast is 20 March, kept on the same day by Catholics, Anglicans and the Eastern Orthodox.
The earliest account of his life is by an anonymous monk of Lindisfarne, followed by the verse and prose lives written by the Venerable Bede around 720, according to Wikipedia.
The Will of God He Sought
Looking back over Cuthbert's road, its direction was always toward the low and the remote. He began beside a flock of sheep, became a guest-master, went out to the villages on the frontier, and in the end chose a tiny island in the middle of the sea. Even when he reached the bishop's chair, it was not a place he had sought.
On this reading, the will of God he sought was not to work from a high position but to serve faithfully in the place he was given, and when the time came to step aside gladly and return to prayer. Whatever one makes of the details of tradition, this outline is what many early records hold in common.
Meditation
First, consider that Cuthbert is said to have worked with gentle tact and patience among monks of different traditions after the Synod of Whitby. How do I act when I must live with people whose ways differ from mine?
Second, consider that he went out even to remote villages. Who around me is not being visited by anyone?
Third, consider that he accepted the bishopric reluctantly and, as death drew near, laid it down. Of the positions and roles I hold, which may I let go?
Fourth, consider that monks are said to have carried and guarded his relics across decades and centuries. What effort am I making to hand on the faith of those who went before us to the next generation?
Lord, we thank you for calling a boy who tended sheep to be monk, hermit and bishop, and for letting him serve you in the lowest places. Make us faithful in the place we are given, and teach us gently to live with those unlike ourselves. Keep us from forgetting those in lonely places, and let us set down gladly what we are called to set down. By the intercession of St. Cuthbert, help us. Amen.
