로마에서 도망친 청년
베네딕도는 약 480년 움브리아 누르시아(이탈리아 중부)의 귀족 가정에서 태어났다. 로마에서 공부했지만 — 5세기 말 로마 도시의 방종과 타락에 깊이 실망하여, 학업을 중단하고 수비아코의 한 동굴로 들어갔다.
3년간 거기서 혼자 살았다.
몬테카시노 — 그리고 「규칙」
추종자들이 모이자 그는 — 12개의 작은 수도원을 세웠고, 마침내 약 529년 몬테카시노(이탈리아 중부의 산)에 그의 최대 수도원을 세웠다.
거기서 그가 쓴 책이 — 「베네딕도 규칙(Regula Benedicti)」 73장.

또 그는 — 환대(hospitalitas)를 강조했다. “손님을 그리스도처럼 받아들이라.” 이게 후대 모든 그리스도교 환대 신학의 기초가 되었다.
쌍둥이 누이 스콜라스티카 — 한 영혼
베네딕도에게는 쌍둥이 누이 스콜라스티카가 있었다. 그녀도 수도자였고, 두 남매는 1년에 한 번 만났다. 그들의 마지막 만남이 — 교회 역사에서 가장 아름다운 우정의 장면 중 하나다.

베네딕도는 우리에게 묻는다 — 너는 너의 자리에서 거룩해질 수 있는가? 다른 자리로 옮기지 않고. 그 자리가 너에게 안 맞아도. 그 자리에서 — 기도하고 일하고 손님을 맞으며 살라.

Monte Cassino — and the Rule
When followers gathered to him he — founded twelve small monasteries, and finally around 529 founded his greatest monastery at Monte Cassino (a mountain in central Italy). The book he wrote there is — the “Rule of Benedict (Regula Benedicti)” in 73 chapters.
This rule is — a charter of concise, humane, balanced monastic life.
Prayer and work (Ora et labora), hospitality, stability (stabilitas), the everyday in a spirit of repentance — these four are its heart.
It became — the standard rule of Western Catholic monasticism for about 1500 years. Today Benedictines, Cistercians, and Trappists all live by this rule.
Stability (stabilitas) — a new spirituality Benedict’s most important new concept was — stabilitas . To remain in one monastery for life . Not to roam the desert. Even when not suited, to become holy in that very place . This was — Benedict’s answer to the wandering spirituality .
He also stressed — hospitality (hospitalitas) . Receive every guest as Christ . This became the foundation of every later Christian theology of hospitality .
Twin sister Scholastica — one soul Benedict had a twin sister Scholastica (Day 53). She too was a monastic, and the two siblings met once a year . Their last meeting is — one of the most beautiful scenes of friendship in Church history .
When Scholastica begged him not to leave that night , Benedict said he must return to his monastery . As she lifted a prayer of tears — a storm suddenly arose that kept him from leaving . She smiled — “You would not listen, but God did.” Three days later Scholastica died peacefully.
The end — standing in his own monastery On March 21, 547 — Benedict, during Mass in his own monastery church, supported by his brother monks and standing with his hands raised , peacefully died. They said he was seen in a vision on his way to meet his sister .
Canonization — universal veneration from apostolic times; Patron Saint of Europe (1964) Feast Day July 11 . Father of Western monasticism. In 1964 Pope Paul VI proclaimed him Patron Saint of Europe — official recognition that the spiritual foundation of European civilization flowed from Benedictine monasteries .
The will of God he sought
Benedict’s life is — the most powerful witness to the holiness of the everyday . Do not roam . Become holy in your own place . Pray and work .
Receive the guest as Christ . These four simple lines became — the spiritual backbone of European civilization .
