성녀 안나와 성 요아킴

성경에 없는, 그러나 가장 사랑받은 두 분
신약성경 전체에서 — 안나와 요아킴이라는 이름은 한 줄도 나오지 않는다. 그러나 가톨릭 신자들에게는 그분들의 손녀 마리아만큼 익숙한 이름이다. 어떻게 된 일인가?
2세기에 쓰여진 외경 「야고보 원복음서(Protoevangelium of Jacobi)」가 마리아의 부모 이름을 처음 기록한다 — 요아킴(Joachim)과 안나(Anna). 이 책은 정경에 들지는 못했지만, 그 안의 두 이름은 살아남아 전 교회의 신앙으로 굳었다.
늙은 부부의 자녀 없는 슬픔
전승은 요아킴이 부유한 양치기였고, 안나는 다윗 가문의 여인이었다고 한다. 두 사람은 결혼한 지 20년이 지나도록 자녀가 없었다. 유다 사회에서 자녀 없는 것은 큰 수치이자 슬픔이었다.
전승에 따르면, 요아킴이 성전에 봉헌물을 가져갔을 때 한 사제가 “자녀가 없는 자의 봉헌은 받을 수 없다”며 그를 돌려보냈다. 그 모욕에 요아킴은 광야로 들어가 40일을 단식했다. 안나도 집에서 울며 기도했다.
두 사람이 각자 다른 곳에서 천사의 음성을 듣는다 — “네 자녀가 태어날 것이다, 그리고 그 자녀는 모든 세대가 복되다 일컫는 자녀의 어머니가 될 것이다.”
그 자녀가 — 마리아다.
마리아를 키운 외조부모
마리아는 안나와 요아킴의 손에서 자랐다. 마리아가 기도를 처음 배운 것도, 성경을 처음 들은 것도, 노래를 처음 부른 것도 — 이 두 분 앞에서였다.
전승은 마리아가 3살에 성전에 봉헌되어 거기서 자랐다고 하지만, 어쨌든 어린 시절의 가르침은 안나와 요아킴에게서 왔다. 그러니 — 예수님의 신앙 교육의 첫 줄기는 안나와 요아킴까지 거슬러 올라간다.
*”할머니, 할아버지의 성인”*
성녀 안나는 — 할머니들·산모들·자녀를 원하는 부부들의 주보 성인이다. 그리고 모든 그리스도교 가정의 신앙 전수의 상징이다.
손자녀에게 신앙을 가르치는 모든 할머니·할아버지가 안나와 요아킴의 길을 걷는 것이다.
2021년 프란치스코 교황은 세계 조부모와 어르신의 날을 7월 넷째 주일로 제정했다 — 정확히 안나·요아킴 축일(7월 26일) 즈음에. 의도는 분명했다 — 조부모의 신앙 전수가 한 가정·한 교회의 기둥이다.
시성 — 사도 시대 보편 공경
축일 7월 26일 (성 요아킴과 성녀 안나, 부부 합동). 캐나다 퀘벡의 생트 안 드 보프레(Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré) 대성당은 북미 최대의 성녀 안나 순례지다. 한국에서는 안나회·요아킴회 등 노년 신자들의 성서 모임이 두 분의 이름을 따라 활발하다.
그분들이 찾아간 하느님의 뜻
안나와 요아킴의 일생은 — 손자녀에게 줄 신앙을 키우는 시간이었다.
그분들은 직접 예수님을 보시지 못했다. 그러나 그분들이 키운 딸이 예수님을 낳았다. 그분들의 신앙은 — 한 세대 너머에 열매를 맺었다.
이게 조부모의 신앙이다 — 자기 시대에 열매를 보지 못해도, 다음 세대를 위해 씨를 뿌리는 것.
묵상
우리도 누군가의 할머니·할아버지가 될(또는 이미 된) 사람이다. 안나와 요아킴은 우리에게 묻는다 — 너의 신앙이 다음 세대에 전수되고 있는가? 손자녀가 너의 얼굴에서 예수님의 그림자를 볼 수 있는가?

Grandparents of Jesus
Not in Scripture — yet most beloved In all the New Testament — the names Anne and Joachim do not appear once. Yet to Catholics they are as familiar as the name of their granddaughter Mary. How?
A 2nd-century apocryphon, the “Protoevangelium of James” , is the first to record the names of Mary’s parents — Joachim and Anne. The book never entered the canon, but the two names within it survived, and grew into the faith of the whole Church.
The childless sorrow of an old couple Tradition says Joachim was a wealthy shepherd and Anne a woman of the line of David. Twenty years into their marriage, they had no children.
In Jewish society being childless was a great shame and sorrow.
According to tradition, when Joachim brought his offering to the Temple, a priest sent him away saying, “The offering of a man without a child cannot be received.” Insulted, Joachim went out to the wilderness and fasted forty days. Anne wept and prayed at home.
In separate places they each heard the voice of an angel — “A child will be born to you, and that child will be the mother of one whom every generation will call blessed.”
That child was — Mary .
Grandparents who raised Mary
Mary grew up in the hands of Anne and Joachim. The first prayer she learned, the first Scripture she heard, the first song she sang — were before these two. Tradition says Mary was presented at the Temple at age three and grew up there, but the teaching of her earliest years came from Anne and Joachim. So — the first stream of Jesus’ religious education goes back to Anne and Joachim.
“Saints of grandmothers and grandfathers”
Saint Anne is — patron saint of grandmothers, expectant mothers, and couples longing for a child . And she is the symbol of every Christian household’s handing on of the faith. Every grandmother and grandfather who teaches the faith to a grandchild walks the path of Anne and Joachim.
In 2021, Pope Francis instituted the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly on the fourth Sunday of July — exactly around the feast of Anne and Joachim (July 26). The intent was clear — the grandparents’ handing on of faith is a pillar of a household and of a Church.
Canonization — universal veneration from apostolic times Feast Day July 26 (Saints Joachim and Anne, together). The Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré in Quebec, Canada, is North America’s largest
pilgrimage site to Saint Anne.
The will of God they sought
The life of Anne and Joachim was — the time of nurturing the faith they would give their grandchild . They never saw Jesus themselves. But the daughter they raised gave birth to him. Their faith — bore fruit one generation later .
This is the faith of grandparents — to sow seeds for the next generation even though one will not see the harvest oneself .
Meditation
We too are (or will become) someone’s grandparent. Anne and Joachim ask us — is your faith being passed on to the next generation? Can your grandchildren see the shadow of Jesus on your face?
