St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa)
Sancta Teresia Calcuttensis* · 1910–1997 · Albanian-born apostle to India · Founder of the Missionaries of Charity · 1979 Nobel Peace Prize

17 August 1948, Calcutta
17 August 1948. Calcutta (today’s Kolkata), India. A nun of thirty-eight, after seventeen years in the black habit of the Loreto Sisters, took it off — and, for the first time, put on a white cotton sari and set foot on the streets of the Moti Jheel slums. The sari had three blue stripes — the colours of Mary. Shoes — none. She had chosen to live among her poor Indian sisters dressed as one of them.
Her name was — Mother Teresa. Born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu. Albanian. That one step on that one day began the greatest twentieth-century Christian movement for the poor of the world.
An Albanian Childhood
Born on 26 August 1910 in Skopje in Kosovo (today’s North Macedonia) — an ethnic Albanian Catholic family. Her father, Nikollë, a merchant and city councillor, is believed to have been poisoned when she was eight. Her mother, Drane, raised the three children alone.
At twelve she had her first sense of religious vocation. Hearing stories of the Irish Loreto Sisters’ missions, she felt drawn to India. At eighteen she entered the Loreto novitiate in Dublin. In 1929 she was sent at eighteen to Calcutta. After learning Bengali she became a teacher at the Loreto Convent School. In 1937 she made her final vows. Her religious name — Sister Teresa (after Thérèse of Lisieux — Day 111).
*The Call within the Call* — 10 September 1946
10 September 1946. On a train from Calcutta to Darjeeling. As she gazed out the window at the countless poor of India, she received what she would later call “the call within the call” — an inner voice asking her to leave the convent and meet Christ among the poorest of the poor.
She tested the call with her spiritual director for two years. In August 1948, with the permission of Pope Pius XII, she laid down the Loreto habit and put on the sari. At first she was alone. Not a single companion.
*Missionaries of Charity*
In 1949 her first twelve companions — among them her former student Subhasini Das — followed her. Without a habit, without final vows — but with the pastoral approval of Pius XII — on 7 October 1950 the Missionaries of Charity was officially founded.
The constitutions had four vows — poverty, chastity, obedience, and a fourth unique among all religious congregations of the world: “wholehearted and free service to the poorest of the poor.”
*Nirmal Hriday* — The Home for the Dying
On 22 August 1952, in the site of an abandoned Hindu temple in Calcutta, Nirmal Hriday (The Pure Heart) opened — the first house in which the dying of the streets could die with dignity. Tens of those carried in from the streets each week — would close their eyes on clean beds with the hand of a sister in theirs, in their final days. Hindu, Muslim, Christian — all. Each person’s final rites were observed according to that person’s own religion.
In 1953 — Shishu Bhavan, the home for abandoned children. In 1957 — Shanti Nagar (City of Peace), a leper colony. In the 1960s — global expansion to Venezuela, Tanzania, Rome. In the 1970s — into communist countries. In 1986 — a return, after fifty years, to her native Albania.
At her death in 1997: 4,000 sisters in 123 countries, 5,000 lay co-workers, 1,000 institutions. The most rapidly expanding religious congregation in Catholic history.
1979 — The Nobel Peace Prize
1979 — the Nobel Peace Prize. In her acceptance speech she gave the controversial line: “Peace begins when abortion ends.” She refused the Nobel Banquet and asked instead that the money be sent to Calcutta.
Her best-known sentences: – “We cannot do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” – “Loneliness — is the worst poverty.” – “In the face of one poor person — we meet the suffering Christ.”
5 September 1997
In her last years, heart disease and strokes. On 5 September 1997, at eighty-seven, she died at the Mother House in Calcutta. She left behind one sari (the one she had worn for fifty years) and one pair of sandals. Her personal property — zero. The Indian state gave her a state funeral. Hindu rites followed by a Catholic Mass — a juxtaposition without precedent in Indian history.
Canonization — 2016, Pope Francis
Mother Teresa was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 19 October 2003 (the fastest beatification in canonization history) and canonized by Pope Francis on 4 September 2016. One hundred and twenty thousand filled St. Peter’s Square. Missionaries of Charity sisters from a hundred countries came.
Her feast is 5 September, the day of her death. She is patron of all who serve the poor, the parish of Calcutta, and overseas missionaries.
The Will of God She Sought
Mother Teresa’s life held three things at once. First, Action. Every day, on the street, the one person within reach. Second, Prayer. Every day — rising at 4:30, Mass at 5, a half hour of silent meditation. Third, the Dark Night. After her first call in 1948, for fifty years — she bore in secret the experience of God’s absence. The secret revealed in her letters after her death is one of the most striking pages of twentieth-century spirituality: The Christ I loved was silent for fifty years — and still I loved him.
Her life is one sentence: *a sari-wearing nun who, in fifty years of spiritual darkness after her call, lifted one person of the street into Christ’s arms every day.*
Meditation
When we experience God’s silence in prayer today — do we stop praying, or go in deeper? Mother Teresa, for fifty years, kept loving the Christ who was silent. The place of silence may be precisely where the deepest love grows.
