24살의 결핵 말기. 침대에 누운 채 그녀는 자신의 일기에 마지막 문장을 적었다. “하늘에 오르면 나는 땅 위에 장미의 비를 내리겠어요.” 이름은 마리 프랑수아즈 테레즈 마르탱 — 그러나 세상이 알게 된 이름은 어린 예수의 테레사.
스물네 살의 한 시골 수녀가 1897년 9월 30일 작은 카르멜 수녀원 침상에서 숨을 거뒀다. 그녀는 기적을 행하지 않았고 신학을 쓰지 않았다. 한 권의 일기만 남겼다. Histoire d’une âme — 한 영혼의 이야기. 그 책 한 권이 20세기 가톨릭 영성을 다시 정의했다.
*어린이의 길*
테레사가 발견한 길은 작음의 길이다. 큰 일도, 영웅적 고행도 못 하는 평범한 영혼이 어떻게 성덕에 이르는가 — 작은 일을 큰 사랑으로. 빨래판 위의 한 손, 누군가에게 짓는 한 미소, 짜증 나는 한 자매에게 보낸 한 침묵. 이런 것들이 곧 천국으로 올라가는 작은 엘리베이터다.
이단순한 가르침이 — 대단함을 못 하는 보통의 가톨릭 신자들에게 문이 열린 길이 되었다. 20세기 그녀의 책은 전 세계 다섯 언어 이상으로 밀리언 셀러가 되었다. 작은 길이 큰 길이 된 것이다.
짧지만 깊은 일생
1873년 1월 2일 프랑스 알랑송에서 태어났다. 부모 루이와 젤리 마르탱 — 두 분 모두 후에 시성됨 (2015). 9명의 자녀 중 막내. 어머니가 4살 때 사망. 누나들이 어머니 역할.
15살에 카르멜 수녀원 입회를 청했다. 너무 어려서 거절. 그러나 교황 레오 13세를 직접 알현해 입회 허락을 청했고 — 결국 입회. 1888년 4월 9일.
수녀원에서의 9년은 조용했다. 큰 환시도 큰 신비 체험도 없었다. 침실의 일상과 부엌의 작은 일들. 1896년 결핵이 발병했다.
*모든 미사의 어머니*
죽기 1년 전부터 그녀는 마지막 영적 가르침을 받아쓰기 시작했다. 그것이 Histoire d’une âme. 1898년 — 그녀가 죽은 1년 후 — 출간되었다. 전 유럽 가톨릭 수녀원과 본당에서 짧은 시간에 회독되었다.
1925년 비오 11세 교황 시성. 1927년 모든 선교지의 보편 주보 성인. 1997년 요한 바오로 2세 교황이 교회 박사로 선포 — 교회 역사상 가장 젊은 박사. 33번째 박사. 34번째는 후에 힐데가르드 빙엔 (2012).

테레사는 1923년 4월 29일 비오 11세 교황에 의해 시복되었고, 1925년 5월 17일 같은 교황에 의해 시성되었다.
축일은 10월 1일. 프랑스, 모든 선교지, 항공 조종사, 결핵 환자, 그리고 모든 평범한 그리스도교 신자의 주보 성인이다.
그녀가 찾아간 하느님의 뜻
테레사의 길은 큰 일을 하지 않는 길이었다. 그러나 — 작은 일을 큰 사랑으로 한 사람은 결국 가장 큰 일을 한 사람이 된다. 그 단순한 어린이의 길 안에 복음의 전부가 들어 있다.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux

September 1897 — The Carmel of Lisieux
Twenty-four years old, the last stages of tuberculosis. Lying in bed, she wrote a final line in her notebook: “When I am in heaven I will let fall a shower of roses on the earth.” Her name was Marie Françoise Thérèse Martin — though the world would come to know her as Thérèse of the Child Jesus.
A young country nun of twenty-four died on the bed of a small Carmelite cell on 30 September 1897. She worked no miracles; she wrote no theology. She left a single notebook — Histoire d’une âme, The Story of a Soul. That one book redefined the spirituality of the twentieth century.
*The Little Way*
The road Thérèse discovered is the road of littleness. How does an ordinary soul — incapable of great deeds or heroic asceticism — reach holiness? By doing small things with great love. A hand at the washboard, a smile given to someone, a kept silence in the face of an annoying sister. These are themselves the little elevator that goes up to heaven.
This simple teaching opened a door for the ordinary Catholic faithful, for whom greatness had seemed inaccessible. In the twentieth century her book became a million-seller in more than five languages. The little way had become a great road.
A Short but Deep Life
She was born on 2 January 1873 in Alençon, France. Her parents, Louis and Zélie Martin — both later canonized (2015). The youngest of nine. Her mother died when she was four. Her elder sisters became her mothers.
At fifteen she asked to enter Carmel. She was refused — too young. So she went in person to Pope Leo XIII to ask for the dispensation, and was finally admitted: 9 April 1888.
Her nine years in Carmel were quiet. No great vision, no great mystical experience. The ordinariness of the cell, the small tasks of the kitchen. In 1896 her tuberculosis began.
*The Mother of Every Mass*
A year before her death, she began to dictate what would be her final spiritual teaching. This is Histoire d’une âme. It was published in 1898, the year after her death. In a very short time it was passed from hand to hand in every Carmel and every parish across Catholic Europe.
She was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925; in 1927 named Universal Patroness of all the Missions; in 1997 declared Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II — the youngest doctor in the Church’s history, the 33rd. The 34th would come later, Hildegard of Bingen (2012).

Thérèse was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 29 April 1923 and canonized by the same Pope on 17 May 1925.
Her feast is 1 October. She is patron of France, all mission lands, pilots, tuberculosis patients, and every ordinary Christian.
The Will of God She Sought
Thérèse’s road was the road of not doing great things. And yet — the one who does small things with great love becomes in the end the one who has done the greatest thing. The entirety of the Gospel is hidden inside that simple little way of childhood.
Her life is one sentence: *a Carmelite nun who, in twenty-four short years, carved into eternity the road of every ordinary Christian.*
Meditation
Today I have done no great thing. But one small thing — a silence given to an irritating person, a meal cooked with tired hands — was my little way today. Was Christ in that small thing? Ask only that one question, this evening, quietly.
